Sphynx are just like any other cats except for one main difference, they do not have as much hair. They are not completely bald, however, since they do have a fine "peach fuzz" like coat. Some sphynx have more than others. Some have more on their ears, tail, and/or feet. Some of our females even tend to grow more of a coat when they are pregnant and nursing and then lose it later. Sometimes the degree of hairlessness can be predicted when they are newborns, but I have seen completely bald kittens grow fuzzier as they get older. One thing is true, the balder they are, the dirtier they can get!!! Because sphynx do not have the hair other cats have to keep the dirt away, such as in their ears, they have a tendency to get as dirty as a child would if given the chance! Their ears also produce a grease-like "wax" that needs routine cleaning. Because of this, sphynx do require more bathing than your average cat. It is always best to check with your vet and/or breeder to see what they recommend as the best shampoo and cleaning solution. We have had great success with baby shampoo for bathing since it is so gentle. We also use baby wipes for sensitive skin, since they do not contain alcohol, for cleaning in between baths. As for their ears, cleaning solutions can be purchased at a low cost from the vet or any pet supply store. We begin bathing our kittens very young, as do most breeders, so by the they go home to a new family, they are used to it. Although, that's not to say that they all enjoy it!
All cats like to snack throughout the day and sphynx are no different. It is a good idea to keep dry cat food available to your sphynx at all times. Again, it is best to check with your breeder and/or vet as to the best food for your sphynx. They do not need any special recipes just because they are bald! We like to give cans of wet food just as a special treat. Of course, fresh, clean water is always a must!!!
Sphynx, like all cats, usually have no trouble learning to use the litter box at a very young age. If your cat does not use his/her litter box that is usually the sign of a problem. It is a good idea to have one more litter box than the number of cats you have. And if you have a two-story house, make sure your cat has access to a litter box on each floor.
Remember, sphynx are naked. While they do not need to be in extremely warm temperatures, chances are, if you would be cold in your house naked, they are too. Some people like to keep sweaters on their sphynx if their home is chilly. I suggest always having a blanket available that they could cuddle up in. The sphynx skin feels very warm to the touch. This makes them great to cuddle up with! I think these cats appreciate your body heat also!
